In the Kitchen
At Colwith Farm Potatoes, looking after the environment is at the heart of what we do. We are proud to be fully approved by the Red Tractor Crop Assured Produce Scheme, which recognises our crops are safe, traceable and farmed with care using sustainable practices than benefit the environment.
It doesn’t stop there. We don’t use plastic packaging. We also make sure none of our produce is wasted. Any potatoes that aren’t suitable for selling – for example, they’re too small or an unusual shape – go to our Colwith Farm Distillery to make vodka and gin, or are used as animal feed.
We don’t want the story to end once our potatoes leave the farm, though. We want our customers to enjoy every single delicious potato they buy from us. But we know it can be a challenge! According to WRAP (the Waste Resources and Action Programme), potatoes are the number one most wasted food in UK homes (1)
Fortunately, storing them properly, paying more attention to how we prepare them, and using up leftovers can help to ensure our potatoes nourish your body rather than the bin. So we’ve teamed up with local dietitian and nutritionist Juliette Kellow to share some tips on how to maximise nutrition and minimise waste…
Did you know?
UK households throw away 1,300 tonnes of potatoes EVERY DAY – that’s equivalent to 8.2 million potatoes! (1)
How to store potatoes
Store your potatoes in a cool, dark, dry place such as a cupboard or garage, or if you prefer in the fridge. Don’t worry if the potatoes start to sprout. It’s still fine to cook and eat them – just remove any shoots and green bits before cooking, (2)
